RENOVATING BRITAIN'S BUSIEST RAIL STATION, LONDON WATERLOO

Work on renovating the UK’s busiest station, London Waterloo, is well underway and due for completion in the next two years. The 100-year old station roof will have around 10,000 new glazing panes fitted to replace the existing glass. This replacement will facilitate improved lighting throughout the station and a 50% reduction in the total glass weight to minimize the stress on station infrastructure.

In 2022 London Waterloo station recorded 57,800,000 entries and exits, a figure that remains uninterrupted by the restoration works that are ongoing across the station. To minimise disruption to Network Rail and its passengers the construction of a suspended roof structure was required and HAKI System Scaffold were appointed by Alltask, a company committed to leading the way on scaffolding and asbestos removal service standards. 

HAKI offered a more advantageous solution over traditional tube and fitting scaffold due to its lightweight nature, quick erection and dismantling times and superior load-bearing capabilities.

The work will be conducted in two areas; Area One is scaffolding to the main roof which will see the suspended deck moved across the concourse. Area Two is scaffolding to the external North and South Port Cochere’s, and adjacent link canopy. HAKI is providing scaffolding to both areas for roof replacement works.

Due for completion in summer 2025 the renovation will bring huge improvements to the passenger experience presenting a modernized station with upgraded security and facilities. HAKI are proud to be supporting this project, bringing improved facilities to the UK’s busiest transport hub.
